? ?Zeolite is a microporous aluminosilicate mineral.Zeolite has a porous structure that can accommodate a wide variety of cations, such as Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and others. These positive ions are rather loosely held and can readily be exchanged for others in a contact solution. Some of the more common mineral zeolites are analcime, chabazite, clinoptilolite, heulandite, natrolite, phillipsite, and stilbite.
Application:
1.Zeolites are widely used as ion-exchange beds in domestic and commercial water purification, softening, and other applications. In chemistry, zeolites are used to separate molecules and as traps for molecules so they can be analyzed.
2.Zeolites are also widely used as catalysts and sorbents, for instance in fluid catalytic cracking and hydrocracking.Their well-defined pore structure and adjustable acidity make them highly active in a large variety of reactions.
3.Zeolites have uses in advanced reprocessing methods, where their micro-porous ability to capture some ions while allowing others to pass freely, allowing many fission products to be efficiently removed from waste and permanently trapped.
4.In agriculture, it is used as a soil treatment. It provides a source of slowly released potassium.
