Once upon a time all the Mice met together in Council, and discussed the best means of securing themselves against the attacks of the cat.
After several suggestions had been debated, a Mouse of some standing and experience got up and said, "I think I have hit upon a plan which will ensure our safety in the future, provided you approve and carry it out. It is that we should fasten a bell round the neck of our enemy the cat, which will by its tinkling warn us of her approach."
This proposal was warmly applauded, and it had been already decided to adopt it, when an old Mouse got upon his feet and said, "I agree with you all that the plan before us is an admirable one: but may I ask who is going to bell the cat?"

06 老鼠會議
從前，所有的老鼠聚集在一起，開會商討免受貓攻擊的良策。
幾個(gè)建議相繼都被否決之后，一只很有威望且經(jīng)驗(yàn)豐富的老鼠站起來，說：“我忽然想到一個(gè)辦法，可以確保大家未來的安全，假如你們贊成的話，我們就這么辦。這個(gè)辦法是，我們應(yīng)該在敵人的脖子上掛一個(gè)鈴鐺，貓走路時(shí)發(fā)出的叮當(dāng)聲，就會警告我們——貓要來了?！?/p>
他的提議受到了大家的贊同，都決定采用這個(gè)辦法，就在這時(shí)，一只年長的老鼠伸出他的前爪，說：“我也贊同這是一個(gè)絕妙的好辦法，但是，我想問一下，誰去給貓系鈴鐺呢?”
A Bat fell to the ground and was caught by a Weasel, and was just going to be killed and eaten when it begged to be let go. The Weasel said he couldn' t do that because he was an enemy of all birds on principle.
" Oh, but," said the Bat, "I' m not a bird at all,I' m a mouse."
"So you are," said the Weasel, "now I come to look at you",and he let it go.
Some time after this the Bat was caught in just the same way by another Weasel, and, as before, begged for its life.
"No," said the Weasel, "I never let a mouse go by any chance."
"But I' m not a mouse," said the Bat; "I' m a bird."
"Why, so you are," said the Weasel, and he too let the Bat go.
Look and see which way the wind blows before you commit yourself.

07 蝙蝠和黃鼠狼

蝙蝠說：“噢，我根本不是鳥兒，只不過是一只老鼠?！?/p>
黃鼠狼說：“原來你是老鼠呀，現(xiàn)在我才看清你?！?/p>
于是，黃鼠狼放走了蝙蝠。不久，蝙蝠又以同樣方式被另一只黃鼠狼捉住了，像從前那樣，他又求黃鼠狼放了自己。
“不行，”黃鼠狼說，“我絕不放過任何一只老鼠?！?/p>
“可我不是老鼠呀，”蝙蝠說，“我是一只鳥兒?！?/p>
“哎呀，原來你是一只鳥兒呀，”黃鼠狼說著，也放走了蝙蝠。
見風(fēng)使舵。
A Crow was sitting on a branch of a tree with a piece of cheese in her beak when a Fox observed her and set his wits to work to discover some way of getting the cheese. Coming and standing under the tree he looked up and said, "What a noble bird I see above me! Her beauty is without equal, the hue of her plumage exquisite. If only her voice is as sweet as her looks are fair, she ought without doubt to be Queen of the Birds."
The Crow was hugely ? attered by this, and just to show the Fox that she could sing she gave a loud caw. Down came the cheese, of course, and the Fox, snatching it up, said, "You have a voice, madam, I see: what you want is wits."

08 狐貍和烏鴉

聽到這番恭維，烏鴉簡直受寵若驚，一心只想著向狐貍炫耀一下自己的歌喉，就“呱”地大叫了一聲。理所當(dāng)然，她嘴里的那塊奶酪就掉了下去，狐貍立刻抓起奶酪，說：“烏鴉夫人，我知道你的歌喉很不錯(cuò)，可你需要的是智慧?！?/p>
